The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Cardiovascular
Outcomes Research Center
will use data for the ARIC Cohort and Community Surveillance to assess the quality,
cost, and outcomes of medical care. The primary focus of the CORC is outcomes
research within the context of heart failure, including risk factors, disease
onset, and outcomes. Ultimately a broad range of cardiovascular diseases will
be studied. The main data sources are primary interview data obtained as part
of ARIC Visit 5 examination, hospital record abstraction, and Medicare claims data.
The CORC, which encourages investigators from outside ARIC to partner with ARIC
investigators in analysis of the full internal ARIC data set, represents the first
formal effort by NHLBI to conduct outcomes research within an epidemiologic study.
