This section of the website is designed to help investigators use data of interest by providing

Dictionaries

for the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study for Exam 1, Exam 2, Exam 3, Exam 4 and Annual Follow Up through contact year 15 of the

Cohort Component

and data through 1998 for the

Surveillance Component.

The ARIC Data Repository includes complete manuals, forms, data dictionaries and variables. Complete manuals for each exam are available under the

Manuals

section. Forms and instructions are included in manuals and are also available separately under

Forms and QxQ

section.

Data Dictionaries

are available for each file, which consist of variable contents, listing of 10 observations, mean values for numeric variables and counts for character variables. The

Derived Variables

have definitions of the derived variables which are essential for most data analysis. There you will find demographic information (such as race, gender, age) and other important derived variables (such as MI classification, nutrient coding, derived stroke variables) for the Cohort Component. (DERPS12,DERPS22,DERPS31, DERPS41) and Surveillance Component (SOCCPS98, SEVTPS98, COCCPS98, CEVTPS98, CDERPS98). These dictionaries are under the derived file sections in Data Information. The

Modified Variables

describe variables that have been modified to protect confidentiality of participants.
